It’s Derby Time!

Dallas Derby Devils

Spring has sprung, which means it’s time to hang up the ice skates and trade ’em in for roller skates.

Readers in the Dallas area have not one but two options today to get your derby on:

1. (My pick) Dallas Derby Devils – North Richland Hills

2. Assassination City Roller Derby – Mesquite

I would like to see the Assassination City squad sometime but this time around I opted to be faithful to DDD. Maybe next month I’ll make the trip to Mesquite, which should be a shorter drive for me.

Here are some suggestions for the uninitiated. Clip ‘n save if you aren’t able to make it out to either event on short no notice:

  • Bring your own chair. That’s right. If you want to be close to the action and kind to your back, bring a folding chair. The metal bleacher seats are a beating.
  • Derby events tend to be BYOB (no glass) but if you want to support the team/venue and get into the spirit, DDD serves cheap beer in cans trackside. We’re talking Pabst and regular Coors here.
  • The announcers can make or break the in-game atmosphere. DDD has really good announcers which is partly why I haven’t gone to see ACRD yet. (Fear of the unknown.)
  • Derby is all volunteer. I tell people that derby (and many other women’s sports) is “crunk” meaning it is completely on a shoestring budget, but when you get into the action and see how much work they have put into it, you’ll be even more impressed and talking about coming back – and telling your friends about it.

Here’s to an exciting season of roller derby action!
